Stop 1: Riverview Ranch

Mike Swidersky of Riverview Ranch in Melanchton Township uses intensive grazing practices to manage his flock of over 600 sheep and custom-grazed cattle. He is also the manager of the 700-acre Grey Dufferin Community Pasture.

Highlights of this stop will include:
  • How to substantially increase soil organic matter
  • How to increase forage production by over 100%
  • How to control flies with proper grazing management
  • See the benefits of outdoor winter feeding

Stop 2: The New Farm Centre

The New Farm Centre demonstrates the power of regenerative agriculture to a wide range of visitors. We have introduced a small herd of cattle, pastured pigs, and poultry to rotationally graze our cover crops.

Highlights of this stop will include:
  • Managing cover crops and maximizing soil fertility with multi-species grazing.
  • Effectively integrating livestock and vegetable production systems.
  • Using detailed record-keeping and data collection to maximize productivity and profit.

Stop 3: Armstrong Family Farm

Steve Martin and his family run Armstrong Family Farm, a commercial cow-calf operation in Dufferin County utilizing AMP (adaptive multi-paddock) grazing techniques. They have recently started using Gallagher eShephard virtual fencing collars for their herd, allowing them to increase their stocking rates and add custom grazing to their operation.

Highlights of this stop will include:
  • Using e-collar virtual fencing to move cattle multiple times per day.
  • Maximizing productivity and profit through AMP grazing.
  • Extending the grazing season and reducing the need for winter feeding.

This is a registered OSCIA Knowledge Sharing Event. If cost is a barrier to you, please reach out to The New Farm Centre at brandi@thenewfarm.ca
